Introductory Webquest: Working in small groups, you are going to explore life and travels of Charles Darwin. Most people know that Charles Darwin was the father of evolutionary biology. However, many people don’t know what sort of a person Charles Darwin was, how he was influenced by his travels/observations or what he contributed to science. By completing this research project, you will become familiar with the life and travels of Charles Darwin.
PART 1 The Life of Darwin
** Research the life of Charles Darwin.
Once you have finished researching information, choose 5-10 dates in Darwin ’s life that YOU believe were significant. Create a vertical (up and down) time line by writing the year of the event on the left side of the line and a detailed description of the event on the right side of the line.
Now, use the time line as a guide for writing an overview of Darwin’s life; should be at least one typed (size 12 Arial double spaced) page in length.
Choose an appropriate illustration or clipart to support the dates on the timeline. Remember, be creative, neat and use color!
Then you’re going to open the world map. Once you have your map, you’re off to your journey.
Using the following two websites, with your map in hand, you’re going to take the voyage of the Beagle. At each site you visit, record at least one important thing that Darwin found (pay attention to the animals). For example when he stopped at the Galapagos Islands, you could note the animals he found such as the Finches, Iguanas, etc. The first site includes excerpts from Darwin's journal about the places he visited. Read these to learn what he found. The second site is a virtual journey in which you will click each location he went to and see what he found.
Compile your timeline, biography, map and information into a poster (virtual or physical) to share with the class. You will be graded on accuracy of information, GUMS, creativity and craftsmanship.
a. Do online research to List the 4 principles of Natural Selection
check out the online explanation and activity about Natural Selection from the Science channel. Read the introduction. Play the Survival Game; for your best game, draw a picture of the 3 critters you selected to evolve and how many years you made it. Then take the 10 question quiz. WRITE DOWN YOUR ANSWERS to the quiz as you take it and turn all of your work in to your instructor.
Run the Natural Selection and evolution __simulation__ as you do the simulation online, complete the worksheet
BE SURE TO RECORD YOUR DATA IN A DATA TABLE and you might want to use http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/ to help you create your graph (select line graph, set the data set to 10 items and 4 groups and then enter your values).
Go to the HHMI short films siteand download the most appropriate video format of The Making of the Fittest: Evolving Switches, Evolving Bodies for your device.
Watch the 15m video with the whole class; discuss as you view.
take the quiz (provided by the teacher, or you can download it).
Then do the online stickleback lab ; completing the lab guide as you go (also downloadable ) - - -you may work in small groups, but each individual must turn in their own copy of the work.
Survival of the Weak and Scrawny check out the pictures and terms in the slide show, then read the article and answer the questions.
